Warning Signs

A quick checklist to determine the potential for abuse:

  • Does your church or group encourage you to be separate from the world, from society, and even other Christians who believe differently than you do?
  • Does your church or group place careful emphasis on unquestioning obedience to authority?
  • Does your church or group teach that males and females have different roles? Does it preach wifely submission and male headship; that God shares His will to the husband and father, who then relays it to his wife and children?
  • Does your church or group believe that they have found the truth and that all others are deceived? Does it promote reformed theology and salvation through grace alone, but uphold specific standards of living?
  • Does your church or group teach that contraception is ungodly, and that Christians are commanded to be fruitful and have an open womb?
  • Does your church or group promote conservative parenting standards, such as Pearl, Ezzo, and others?
  • Does your church or group teach that godly parents will homeschool their children, and discourage adult daughters from leaving home to pursue a college degree or career?
  • Does your church or group teach that children should remain at home until marriage, and that adult daughters are helpmeets-in-training?
  • Does your church or group promote courtship and betrothal methods of relationships?
  • If YOU were to question any of these teachings would you be considered rebellious? Deceived? Fallen away? Under a spiritual attack?
